NEWS & REVIEWS for
THE MAGICIAN AND THE FOOL

July 18 -- Romantic Times. 4 out of 5 stars. "Hugely imaginitive...intriguing plot...literate prose and rich detail add depth to an entertaining story."

July 13 -- "The quest for the deck, for the authenticity of the deck, for (self) knowledge and power (over self and others) was so deliciously rendered in The Magician and The Fool. It is a dizzying read, as if I am caught in the dilemmas of the characters and the mind I hold onto as a reader, as a self is unmoored, shattered by possibilities I haven’t seen or noticed. The Magician and The Fool reminds me that what I think I know is so often a sham and lays bare that who I think I am is a story I tell myself everyday to make sure I
continue to believe. Identity is a spell cast, a set of reflecting mirrors.

"The Escher-prose of The Magician and the Fool is hypnotic and infuriating, revealing and concealing an impossible story told from impossible perspectives. The mystery of the characters’ relations, connections, pulls us into a world contained between reflecting mirrors and truth, taunts us while escaping off to infinity, which we glimpse at the edge, in the folds and layers of beautifully written descriptions and inspired story telling, myth making."

Author of Mindscape and the forthcoming
Redwood and Wildfire

July 8 -- The Spanish language rights to The Magician and The Fool were sold to Factoria de Ideas (Spain).

"A fabulous convoluted fantasy thriller that takes us deep into the arcane world of the tarot. Barth at his best." -- Author Midori Snyder

"Very sophisticated and understated. One of my favorite fantasies so far in 2008." -- Author and reviewer Don D'Amassa

"Slow and disjointed...all in all this is not a story for every reader, but it can be an enjoyable ride for the right reader." -- Mikki Thicklin, Fantasy Magazine

"An enigma, wrapped in a riddle, hidden in the first tarot deck, drives this thriller. The action spirals back and forth in space and time between Jeremiah Rosemont, fallen academician, and Boy King. The two are linked, and pursue and are pursued through space and time—clarity is not one of the book’s concerns—relying on the kaleidoscopic exposition to mesmerize the reader. A third presence is Rosemont’s old friend, current nemesis and extreme academic John C. Miles, while a fourth factor is an eldritch binder. Anderson, author of The Patron Saint of Plagues, infuses his new novel’s hermeneutical caravanserai with a leavening amount of wit, propelling the reader on to its inevitable conclusion." -- Lavender Magazine:

May 12 -  Short story "The Refutation of Rosemont" available at Strange Horizons, depicting a "letter to the editor" written by John C. Miles, one of The Magician and The Fool's main characters.

"THE MAGICIAN AND THE FOOL is thoroughly enjoyable, and imbued with a rich sense of wonder. What starts out as a juggernaut thriller subtly and skillfully turns into study of magic in the modern world." -- FantasyBookSpot by Craig Gidney  (9 out of 10 stars)

April 13 - "One-word reaction: wow. Two-word directive: read it." -- Eric Marin, editor of Lone Star Stories, regarding M&F

April 11 - Short story "Clockmaker's Requiem" (Clarkesworld Magazine) made the ballot for the Locus Poll and Survey.

April 7 - The Magician and the Fool has gone back to reprint.

"Bottom line, Barth Anderson's THE MAGICIAN AND THE FOOL is the kind of book that wins awards, is taught in college courses, and will be one of the best releases of the year." -- Robert Thompson of FANTASY BOOK CRITIC

"Anderson sets you up to expect a certain type of narrative and plot and then proceeds to drop you down the rabbit hole with hardly any clues as to what's happening but so intrigued you can't stop reading…I couldn't give it up. I had to know where the story was leading and what would happen…If you like crisp dialogue, well-developed characters, some laugh-out-loud scenes, allusions to things barely or only subconsciously remembered stories -- the ones that raise the hairs on the back of your neck, and a nonlinear story line -- this is a book you need to read. And if you happen to know anything about tarot it will just add to the underlying feelings of déjà vu." - Gumshoe

"Brilliantly drawn characters draw you into this magical mystery tour-de-force, and take you on a magic carpet ride into the strange and wondrous cult of the Tarot. Barth Anderson's grasp of the darkness and light of human nature will astound and astonish." --Ann Benson, author of THE PLAGUE TALES

"Compelling...a fevered dream universe" -- Publishers Weekly
